The words “personal potential,” “self-help” and “personal growth” are sometimes used interchangeably, and have been an increasing part of mainstream culture and discourse. In my experience with exploring my own personal potential, I came across many different types of seminars, workshops, spiritual teachings, and tools to uncover the truth of who I am and to live more fully and vitally. After I took the Satvatove Foundational course I felt strongly that there was something very different about the culture of Satvatove that allowed me to go deeper than at other personal potential seminars. The element that made the difference for me was the rigorous and imperative focus on transformative communication.

There are many fundamental elements in transformative communication, such as empathy, empathic and reflective listening, fine tuning the messages we give with our body language, our voice, and the way we pay attention to others. In the seminar I spent three days really understanding where I was at with that, and determining where I wanted to be. My experience in spiritual retreats and other personal potential gatherings has been that I would very excitedly gather in new tools, exciting revelations, and peak experiences. Then when I would go home and reintegrate with my life, my new habits would slip back into the older, more worn out methods of living. This would frustrate me and I would go to more and more seminars to recreate those experiences, attempting to understand what I had missed or why I was not able to create a more sustainable effect in my life.

What I realized after attending the Satvatove Foundational Seminar, and going back into my life and creating profound results and sustainable change was that the tools of transformative communication gave me the understanding and confidence to truly listen to others. Furthermore, I was now in a position to present myself in such a way that others understood me. This sincerely bridged the gap for me in experience, because without those powerful tools my previous experiences with exploring new avenues for personal potential quickly faded until forgotten. I was simply not able to convey the experience to others in a way that integrated realization into action, revelation into change.

Another aspect of the Satvatove transformative communication model that created a more powerful experience for me is the idea that language reflects consciousness. In the seminar room there is an enthusiastic focus on the nature of the human experience as being primarily spiritual. Within this framework, the communication exercises that offered empowerment to me became more alive. When seeking advancement in the area of personal potential, often various learning models will offer spiritual awareness, or communication tools, but seldom are both seen in one seminar room. That for me was the true difference in experience, and why I was seemingly able to create sustainable and noticeable change in my life. Understanding the spiritual nature of experience, and how language and communication both inform and are informed by this process, is a powerful paradigm for personal potential, interpersonal relations, and profound growth.

KD: Thank you for agreeing to speak with me Dr. Wolf. I am curious about this phrase I have heard, “pulling the weeds in the garden of the heart.” Can you tell me what it means?

DW: This refers to a metaphor I read about, given by Srila Rupa Goswami, a sage who lived hundreds of years ago. Essentially it means cultivating the flowers of spiritual devotion, of purity. And just like in a garden, there are flowers growing, and there are weeds. As we cultivate our self realization, our understanding of our true identity as spiritual beings, it is important to be conscious of our weeds, and pulling our weeds.

We may engage in some powerful spiritual meditation, which waters the flowers of spiritual growth and devotion. At the same time, subtly, we develop a mentality of “I am so superior to those who just drink beer and go to the football game.” This arrogance gets in the way of our spiritual practice. Every moment of meditation waters the flowers, but it also waters the weed of arrogance. This strangles the flower of devotion.

KD: How does this concept relate to the principles of transformative communication that you teach?

DW: Communication is all pervasive, so there is communication with others, and there is communication with myself. And the quality of our communication is the quality of our life. Let’s say we develop the weed of resentment. This is very self sabotaging, it pollutes our inner atmosphere. I may not be aware of this, I may think, I am resentful because this person acted this way and it wasn’t fair. But when I look a little deeper I may realize I have been holding onto this resentment for months, or even years, because I get to feel superior. Or maybe I am holding onto resentment to avoid the courage it would take to actually call that person and have a conversation about why I feel hurt, and to engage in empathic, assertive, considerate communication. To avoid healthy communication that could transform conflict into closeness, I will stay in that resentment, and then I feel justified

to never talk to the person again. Another layer could be that I am not even aware I am resentful, because I may think I am such a transcendentalist. Therefore I am avoiding genuine spiritual process and honest transformative communication.

KD: What results have you seen in people’s relationships when they implement this tool into their communication processes?

DW: Profound relief, and freedom. Sometimes, something that has caused bitterness and resentment for years, can be cleared in just a few minutes. A heavy burden or heavy baggage can be unloaded in a matter of minutes with the principles of deep listening, and high level communication. This process of transformative communication creates a sacred space between people and within ourselves, and in that space oftentimes people see themselves. So they get to live in authenticity, in joy, and enriched. I have seen this with myself and with thousands of others.

KD: Thank you for such an inspiring, enlivening conversation about transforming the quality of our spiritual life with simple communication efforts.

DW: Thank you!

In the processes of transformative communication and personal development, it is important to aim our efforts at

the ultimate goal of human life, namely, spiritual growth and understanding. Many choose to learn and master the principles of conscious living in order to increase sales, create more intimacy, or experience better communication at work. However, if we understand that improving in these areas only creates happiness when it supports our understanding of the ultimate goal of life, spiritual growth, than the process of self-realization becomes profoundly more satisfying.

When I think back on my Satvatove experience over the past year “spiritual growth” is the phrase that comes to me the most strongly, although I did not attend to attain this. I went to the seminars because I saw so many of the people in my life enjoying the benefits I mentioned. For example, at least three of my friends participated and were able to quit their day jobs to build a brand and business around their passions. This was very attractive to me. I went to the workshops and was able to do the same thing. The Foundational Seminar supported my ability to communicate to be understood, as well as become a more empathic listener, both skills being essential to achieving my career goal. The Advanced Course helped me let go of everything that was in the way of me believing in myself to live a fully expressive, empowered life. And so,

upon the completion of these two courses, I set out to create what I felt I was meant to, a book and a series class assisting those affected by specific types of trauma to overcome the effects and live the life they are meant to.

In order to “live the life we are meant to” it is essential to inquire into the nature of who we are and why we are here. Realizing this, simply knowing that I could achieve my material and career goals, while thrilling at first, became mildly dissatisfying. And while I felt very accomplished, I also wondered if I was really serving anyone by helping them overcome their life challenges without taking these two major questions relating to spiritual growth into account. After all, on the material level, I was now experiencing the full manifestation of what I always thought my life purpose was, to help others overcome trauma. I realized that without situating personal growth in the context of spiritual growth, the work I was doing was interesting only to an extent. Helping those attending my classes and reading my writing to understand their spiritual nature and identity became the new challenge. And it is a work in progress. But as the saying goes, if we don’t know where we are going, we probably won’t get there. I do know that spiritual growth as process, and as goal, creates the personal development experience as a much more enlivening endeavor.

An Opportunity for a Fulfilling Career of Service to the Highest Aspirations of Humanity

The Satvatove Institute Create With Your Words with Satvatove CoachingSchool of Transformative Coaching (SISTC) offers you an opportunity to master the art and science of spiritual life coaching. Principles and Practices of Transformative Coaching (PPTC), the foundational coach training course of SISTC, emphasizes the science of self-realization as a basis for facilitating others to achieve a life of profound fulfillment and extraordinary accomplishment.

“Science” indicates an experiential process within the context of a sound and complete philosophical model. Transformative Communication, as the theoretical and applied framework for the spiritual life coaching practiced and taught at Satvatove, provides principles for self-development solidly grounded in ancient wisdom traditions, integrated into an experiential learning model aligned with the most powerful, cutting edge practices of the human potential movement. This combination, unique to Satvatove Institute’s spiritual life coaching program, supports and challenges you to excellence, to being a potent force for your clients to live a life of sublime purpose that springs from the essence of their being.

Capacity to coach others is strongly correlated with the personal development of the coach, and thus PPTC focuses, along with training in skills, techniques and principles, on cultivating the self-awareness of the coach. By participating in Satvatove’s spiritual life coaching program, you’ll find your own personal spiritual realizations deepened and strengthened.

“The personal development aspect of the Satvatove Transformative Coaching Training Program has moved me a few quantum leaps forward in my intra-personal, interpersonal and spiritual growth. And, because of the incredible coaching skills I gained from Satvatove’s spiritual life coaching course, Principles and Practices of Transformative Coaching, I’ve had the confidence to step up and establish my Spiritual Life Coaching practice. I sincerely appreciate the depth of understanding about principles of coaching and transformation. This empowers me to be wise and flexible in supporting clients to discover paradigm-busting insights. Now I’m able to serve others, usually with remarkable results, doing something that is profoundly rewarding for me, and be well compensated financially for doing it.”

“Satvatove’s spiritual life coaching program has been one of the most powerful, enriching and transformative experiences in my life. I started the program wanting to develop and expand my ability to serve others in their personal growth and healing. I got so much more than what I could have envisaged or even bargained for! The service I wanted to give to others I found first for my own self through this program… I found the structure of the program very enlivening and empowering – within this structure I found enough framework to guide me alongside plenty of space to apply and integrate my own creativity and ideas. The content of this spiritual life coaching program was challenging, stretching and supportive. What I especially appreciated was that it was well-rounded and balanced… And lastly but definitely not least, the amount of care, support and nurturance I experienced throughout the program was a gift unsurpassed. All the energy and effort I put into the program I received a thousand-fold in return through unconditional support, constant care and compassionate challenge. I feel very fortunate and grateful for the opportunity this program offered by Satvatove.”
