THE PRINCIPLES AND PROCESS OF PERSONAL COACHING
By David B. Wolf
What Actually Happens In A Life Coaching Session?
Most life coaching sessions, in my experience, begin with the client expressing a life area on which they want to focus. The life coach then enters the client’s world and demonstrates understanding of the client’s perspectives, emotions, and inner conversation. Such a climate of empathy becomes the driving force for transformation and self-realization for the client, and often for the coach as well.
Self-Introspection
In this safe environment the client gets to courageously introspect, lifting the lid to parts of the self that have until that point been less than conscious. With this raised awareness, and the supportively challenging presence of the life coach, the client encounters and addresses issues, fears, inspirations, patterns and connections, and maybe self-deceptions and unacknowledged strengths. Countless times we have witnessed this process lead to clarity about identity and life purpose, as well as resolve to boldly stretch limits and move forward to create a life consistent with one’s highest vision.
Focus On Experience
Melissa opened one life coaching session stating that she wanted to examine a specific relationship in her life, and asking the life coach for feedback on how I perceive her in connection with interpersonal relations. I shared my perceptions with her, and then endeavored to understand Melissa’s situation. In this attempt my listening focused not so much on the story or external details, but rather on Melissa’s experience and feelings, and on the meaning that Melissa gave this experience. My hope and intention was that Melissa felt safe, respected and secure, to honestly explore.
Self-Reflection Leading To Insights
This self-reflection resulted in fresh insights for Melissa. These realizations were painful, though also exhilarating for her to experience. She saw that in this particular relationship she did use principles and practices, such as win/win, full personal accountability, and avoidance of common roadblocks to communication consistent with highly effective interpersonal relations, and that the other person, most of the time, didn’t evince or employ such principles. Further, Melissa realized that her frustration, hurt and resentment stemmed from disappointment that this other person was not more evolved in his way of interacting with her.
With deeper consideration Melissa recognized that accompanying these feelings of hurt and disappointment were feelings of superiority. She got to feel right, better than the other person. Subtly, Melissa was playing the same right/wrong game for which she severely judged the other person. This was quite impactful for Melissa to acknowledge, and it led to contemplation and conversation about her insecurities that fueled her need to feel superior.
Commitments
This session closed with the client committing to herself and the life coach to complete a specific exercise that would facilitate her to concretely identify self-defeating beliefs surrounding the patterns she noticed during the session, and to doing focused journaling within a day after her contacts with this other person. Every productive life coaching session contains cultivation of self-awareness, and most effective sessions also include a specific plan of action.
Where Could Life Coaching Be Beneficial?
The above example relates to life coaching around relationships. The same principles and process are naturally applied to other areas of focus, including financial management, health, and spiritual practice. I encourage you to bring to mind an issue or challenge in your life that is emotionally-charged. Consider what it would look and feel like for you to parallel Melissa’s process, of taking inventory of what’s happening in an honest yet compassionate spirit. The next step includes peeling off the layers and seeing what’s beneath, and then playfully challenging yourself with a detailed action plan. In this process, you can also reflect on where in this self-coaching process your blind spots might be, and where a transformative coach, outside yourself, might be beneficial.
SATVATOVE 3: AN ADVENTURE IN CONSCIOUS LIVING
How Can I Truly Accept Myself As I Am?
How Can I Accept Reality As It Is?
How Can I Live On Purpose?
All these are questions that I have asked myself and continue to live in. Do you ask yourself these questions? What answers have you uncovered?
In Satvatove 3: An Adventure in Conscious Living, each participant got the opportunity to ask themselves these questions. I got to delve deeply into these questions. I gained experiential realization about each of these soul-searching, life-defining enquiries.
Brajarani, a fellow Satvatove 3 graduate, wrote, “… with each process I felt closer and closer to my soul, the ultimate divine power and my life purpose in connection with that.”
Serene shared “I left feeling complete, peaceful, fully satisfied and deeply connected to myself and my eternal relationship with God… I left with a newfound urgency to live my life on purpose.”
What would it be like for you to give yourself the gift of this experience? How would your life be different?
Marie, another fellow Satvatove 3 graduate, expressed “My heart feels open, at last, with a tremendous new sense of peace, calm, and acceptance of myself and others that I have not known before.”
Lacey shared “I experienced what a conscious world looks and feels like and I am more confident about a conscious world happening now rather than some day in the distant future.”
What would your life and relationships look life if you were to create this experience for yourself? What difference would it make for you to live from an accepting, peaceful and open heart? What would a conscious world look and feel like for you?
I know for me personally life hasn’t looked the same since. Reality may be the same reality within which I lived before, yet my experience of it is different. Instead of being at the mercy of my stubborn resistances I more easily get to choose and experience acceptance. Rather than drown in the deadening folds of meaninglessness I get to constantly live in an unfolding life of purposefulness. Where I saw threat I now see benevolence. Where I experienced loneliness I now experience community. Where once I fought, I now surrender.
I humbly invite you to consider what your life could be like if you were to delve ever more deeply into the principles and experiences of acceptance, purposefulness, responsibility and conscious choice.
I wholeheartedly invite you to give yourself the gift of this Satvatove 3 experience.
What value would you, your family, friends and community at large gain by you giving yourself this experience?
A TASK IN LIFE…
“Nothing is more likely to help a person overcome or endure troubles than the consciousness of having a task in life.”
Victor Frankl

THE SEMINAR STARTS NOW!
Association
In the late 90s, after the first Satvatove Foundational Courses, we found that course graduates naturally continued their association with each other. Subsequent to the Advanced Courses, which began in 2002, this tendency showed itself even stronger, with seminar participants meeting together in-person and forming email conferences, long after the seminar experience had ended. The Life Mastery Program, started in 2004, was developed to provide a structure for this natural tendency towards a community of like-minded persons.
A Safe Environment
Perhaps the core attractive feature of the Satvatove seminars is the creation of a safe environment where participants feel safe and free to express themselves at a deep level of honesty. Naturally, we desire this sense of real community in our lives; it is not surprising that course participants are eager to maintain connection with each other. “Real community” refers to a high-trust environment where people feel safe to reveal their minds in confidence. In such an atmosphere conflicts are effectively addressed, not denied. Handling conflicts and tensions with high-level interpersonal skills, based on principles of compassionate, responsible communication, results in closeness, understanding, and intimacy.
Structure
Above we referred to “structure.” For some the term could evoke a sense of constraint or limit. Actually, appropriate structure offers the possibility of freedom and distinctive personal expression. Guidelines, parameters, and ground rules are an integral element of the Foundational and Advanced Seminars. These structures don’t limit individual expression. Rather, they are a vibrant aspect of the safe atmosphere that fosters unique and inspired expression, a more profound and authentic expression than many have previously experienced. As an analogy, the rules, or structure, of the road, are designed to assist us in achieving our goal, not to confine or stifle us.
Commitment
Commitment is required to establish new, healthy, and effective habits and to discard former patterns that no longer serve our life purpose. In the seminars we say, “The course starts on Sunday evening [or whenever the seminar officially ends].” What happens in the seminar room is special and profound. More important is what happens in the days, months and decades following the seminar experience. Similarly with coaching, we often express that what happens between coaching sessions is more significant than what happens during the sessions. We’re interested not just in maintaining our realizations from the seminar, or the coaching sessions. We want to expand them so that they are ever-increasingly alive. It is deeply encouraging to hear from course graduates who took the seminars years ago about how they are applying the principles they absorbed and using the skills they learned more and more each year. In this way the seminar experience is a seed that grows and blossoms, making a powerful difference in lives, communities, and the world.
Responsibility
Active caring and support for one another is a crucial nutrient in the growth of that seed. They inspire the courage and determination for authentic living and for making the changes we desire. Of course, recognizing the formidable influence of association and environment is not contrary to full personal responsibility for our experience and the results in our life. We don’t blame our association or the lack of it, if things aren’t working out as we like in some area of our life. We accept responsibility. Neither does this mean that we blame ourselves. Responsibility means acknowledging that we responded, or didn’t respond, in certain ways, and that led to particular results and experiences. Often blame, and also wallowing in emotions such as guilt or shame, can be a means to avoid squarely examining our responsibility for our lives: past, present and future. Accepting responsibility for my life, I recognize how much association influences me. Thus, I commit to surrounding myself with people who are similarly dedicated to principles of personal growth, who will challenge and support me in forming strong character and a life of excellence, fulfillment, and remarkable achievement.
Satvatove Community
We invite you to connect with the Satvatove community in whatever way that inspires you. Consider reestablishing contact with people with whom you went through the Foundational or Advanced Seminars. In doing so, there may naturally be an element of nostalgia, reconnecting with your seminar connection. And, if we choose, we can create more than that in such interactions. We can move and inspire each other to reenergize our determination for fulfilling our vision, living and not being satisfied with surviving in mediocrity. Also, consider contacting Advanced Course graduates in your area and forming an LMP, creating a powerful structured environment as a springboard to new heights.
The seminar starts now. Let’s dedicate and rededicate ourselves to creating communities of vital, nourished, powerful individuals interacting from purpose, choice and joy, rather than from fear. We possess the capacity to generate value for each other, in each and every contact. Let’s inspire each other through life-enriching association, bringing alive discoveries and realizations from our Satvatove experience.
FROM SERENE
“This seminar exceeded all of my expectations and I left feeling complete, peaceful, fully satisfied and deeply connected to myself and my eternal relationship with God. I experienced resisting in the beginning, and through that experience, finding my grounded self and where I really stand. My overall experience was one of watering my creeper of divine devotion and nurturing my soul deeply. I noticed that many subtle weeds were removed without even putting energy towards them, and although they did not seem so prevalent, they were deeply rooted and very strong. I felt that in this seminar the Satvatove teachings were fully complete, and I left with a newfound urgency to live my life on purpose.”

FROM JENNIFER
“I experienced the Satvatove 3 course as very powerful. I was able to connect with subtle blocks I didn’t even recognize were keeping me from connecting with God and living on purpose. I left the course fully aware and connected to the areas of my life that I need to focus on and the blocks that are holding me back. Since the course ended I’ve experienced more awareness, connectedness and meaning in my actions and interactions. It was an invaluable course that came at the perfect time!”

Satvatove 3 – September 2010
FROM BRAJARANI
“The seminar has left me with deep appreciation for the way it was all put together; so diligently creating such impact in a most profound spiritual way. With each process I felt closer and closer to my soul, the ultimate divine power and my life purpose in connection with that. I am still amazed at the height of blissful spiritual experiences some participants had. At first I thought, this is the height of spiritual experience, it cannot get better, but quickly realised there is no limit to such spiritual experiences. It is ever expanding and an experience not to be missed.”
